Many Ancient Egyptians believed that the sun was reborn each morning and descended each night into the underworld known as the Duat. While traveling through the Duat, the diminished sun was endangered by forces of darkness. It was guided by a host of gods including a scarab-faced deity named Khepri, god of dawn and the renewal of life. Duat represents Khepri’s never-ending journey through the space between life and death to ensure that the sun will always rise.
