In “River Rivals,” even the most peaceful animals engage in fierce competition in their search for fresh fish: Using their strengths and highly effective gear, two animal clans compete for dominance on the river, and they won’t shy away from paw swipes and claw attacks. “River Rivals,” published by the Vienna-based game publisher Piatnik, is a clever family game for two players ages ten and up, in which every attack from your opponent requires a smart response.
Purple and turquoise fish dart about in the river, while on its banks, lynx, raccoons, and others prepare to set out on their hunt. It’s sure to be exciting, as the two Danish designers, Christian Kudahl and Mads Fløe, have given each animal competitor unique strengths and abilities. Effects such as “Quick Catch” or “Claw Attack” can be activated immediately upon playing a card from your hand. If, at the end of your turn, three animal cards are in a column (i.e. in front of a river section), great! If the total strength of these cards is now higher than that of the competition in the opposite river section, you may catch fish of your own colour—provided there are enough empty fish spaces on your animal cards. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait for the next opportunity.
Tactical approach and planning are important, but they aren’t everything in “River Rivals”: The draw pile contains a wide variety of animal cards, some of which can even trigger a chain reaction of additional effects. And just like that, the duel can take a completely different turn!
This animal showdown by the river never gets boring, even after repeated play sessions. That’s thanks to the challenging Advanced Mode, which features 18 additional equipment cards that provide plenty of variety with one-time or permanent special effects. Spring-loaded shoes, a picnic barricade, and lucky greens are just three of the imaginative tools that can be used in the battle for the best fishing spot. All cards—as well as how to get started with this tactical two-player game—are explained in detail in the clearly structured rules. After about twenty minutes of play, the duel—vividly brought to life by illustrator Lars Besten—is decided, and the animal clans are ready for a rematch.
